He studied with Franceen Downing, Dr. Bob Bennett @ Fresno State College in Fresno, California, and Dr. Frank McGinnis at California State University at Northridge (CSUN). He graduated from CSUN in 1983 with a Bachelor's Degree in music composition.Experience: The son of a professional musician, Jim Barnett began playing piano at the age of 3. He performed all through junior high & high school at the piano. He was Drum major/student conductor in his senior year at Bullard High School in Fresno, California. At 23, Jim joined Bob Banner Associates in Beverly Hills where he arranged and conducted for Olympic gold medalist Peggy Fleming's "A Concert on Ice". At 25, he joined Johnny Mathis as the singer's arranger, conductor, and pianist. Jim toured with Mathis for 5 years around the world, doing concerts and television appearances. Venues include The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson, The Merv Griffin Show, Mike Douglas, Dinah Shore, a Christmas special with Diahann Caroll, and the inaugural show of "Name That Tune". While with Mathis, Jim received a gold record for a British recording of "Johnny Mathis Sings the Great Songs", recorded in London with the BBC Orchestra. He also was conductor of four symphony orchestras: Dallas, Hartford, Denver, and Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. Over the years, Jim has played with many well-known musicians, including John Davidson, Henri Mancini, Barry Manilow, Paul Williams, Thelma Huston, and Marilyn and Allen Bergman. Jim resides in San Luis Obispo County, where he is involved in the local jazz scene with the SLO Jazz Federation members and others. He and his singing partner, Deanna Delore, have formed the duo "Nu Monet" and perform regularly in local venues.
